Comme chaque mois à l’École de baguage des oiseaux d’Afrique de l’Ouest, nous avons accueilli un ornithologue invité, avec une bourse pour la formation, la nourriture et l’hébergement. Cette fois-ci, la bourse a été attribuée à Abiola Sylvestre Chaffra, originaire du Bénin.
Il a participé à une formation intensive lors de la session de baguage à la Station Ornithologique du Delta du Sénégal, aux côtés de bagueurs venus des Amériques, du Royaume-Uni, des Pays-Bas, d’Espagne et de Catalogne.
Sa formation se poursuit la semaine prochaine dans son pays.
Une fois sa certification obtenue, il recevra un kit de baguage complet, entièrement gratuit grâce aux bourses d’études pour bagueurs africains de l’ Ornithology and Birding School.
As they do every month, the West African Bird Ringing School hosted a guest ornithologist. This time, the scholarship (for training, food and accommodation) went to Abiola Sylvestre Chaffra from Benin. He participated in intensive training during the ringing session at the Senegal Delta Ornithological Station, alongside ringers from the Americas, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain, and Catalonia.
His training continues next week in his home country.
And when he receives his certification, he will be given a complete ringing kit, all free of charge thanks to the Ornithology and Birding School’s African Ringer Scholarships.
Mahamadou Alpha Issifou, from Niger, was our scholarship recipient in December. Our friend has an ambitious project for his country, and at the West African Bird Ringing School, we wanted to support him with a completely free academic stay at the Djoud Bird National Park, where we also provided him with accommodation and meals.
He also had the opportunity to witness the birth of the cr-ring project for pelicans and see how a large bird is handled.

Notre ami porte un projet ambitieux pour son pays et, à l’École de baguage des oiseaux d’Afrique de l’Ouest, nous avons souhaité le soutenir en lui offrant un séjour académique entièrement gratuit au Parc national des Oiseaux du Djoud, où nous avons également pris en charge son hébergement et ses repas. Il a ainsi eu l’opportunité d’assister au lancement du projet de baguage des pélicans (cr-ring) et de voir comment on manipule un oiseau de cette taille.
Muhumuza Christopher, from the Avian Conservation Uganda Society, was our first international scholarship recipient at the Senegal Delta Ornithological Station (SODS).
Last October, he arrived in Dakar from Uganda, where we met him at the airport to transfer us to Djoudj National Bird Park.
From the very first moment, Muhumuza actively participated in the scientific bird ringing training, led by international experts from Europe. All his transfers, boat trips through the Delta, accommodation, and meals were provided courtesy of the SODS scholarship. But most importantly, he was able to learn and practice with dozens of birds at the National Park’s Biological Station, which, as always, also provided full support and logistical assistance. He was accompanied by several other young ornithologists from Senegal and other African countries.
Muhumuza’s goal is to become a great bird ringer and lead the Avian Conservation Uganda Society’s ornithological station.

Muhumuza Christopher, de la Avian Conservation Uganda Society, a été notre premier boursier international à la Station ornithologique du delta du Sénégal (SODS).
En octobre dernier, il est arrivé à Dakar en provenance d’Ouganda, où nous l’avons accueilli à l’aéroport pour le conduire au Parc national des Oiseaux du Djoudj.
Dès son arrivée, Muhumuza a participé activement à la formation scientifique au baguage des oiseaux, animée par des experts internationaux européens. Tous ses transferts, ses excursions en bateau dans le delta, son hébergement et ses repas ont été pris en charge par la bourse de la SODS. Mais surtout, il a pu apprendre et s’exercer avec des dizaines d’oiseaux à la station biologique du parc national, qui, comme toujours, lui a apporté un soutien complet et une assistance logistique. Il était accompagné de plusieurs autres jeunes ornithologues du Sénégal et d’autres pays africains.
L’objectif de Muhumuza est de devenir un excellent bagueur d’oiseaux et de diriger la station ornithologique de la Société ougandaise de conservation des oiseaux.

Training scholarship
The Ornithological Station of the Senegal Delta (which ring birds in Diawling NP, Oiseaux National Park and Langue de Barbarie NP) offers training grants for its bird-ringing campaigns in Senegal and Mauritania. The grant includes 100% free training, accommodation and meals. Once the training is completed and the candidate receives their bird-ringing permit (from the local government), they will receive full technical equipment
L’ Station ornithologique du delta du Sénégal (qui bague les oiseaux du Parc National des Oiseaux, du PN de la Langue de Barbarie et PN Diawling) offre des bourses de formation pour ses campagnes de baguage au Sénégal et la Mauritanie. La bourse comprend la formation, l’hébergement et les repas entièrement gratuits. Une fois la formation terminée et le candidat ayant reçu son permis de baguage (délivré par le gouvernement local), il recevra l’équipement technique complet.
Italie
International experience scholarships
As part of the Birding Congress, OrnithoSchool is offering scholarships to gain advanced experience. The scholarships involve participating two weeks of bird-ringing campaigns in Italy (thanks to the support of the Oasi Costiera Ornithological Station in the Adriatic). Participants receive accommodation, meals, and transportation for the two weeks.
Dans le cadre du Birding Congress, OrnithoSchool offre des bourses pour acquérir une expérience approfondie. Ces bourses permettent de participer à deux semaines de campagnes de baguage d’oiseaux en Italie (grâce au soutien de la station ornithologique Oasi Costiera, dans l’Adriatique). Les participants bénéficient de l’hébergement, des repas et du transport pendant ces deux semaines.

Thanks to the establishment of the West African Bird Ringing School, the scholarships are also taking a step forward. In addition to free transportation to national parks, accommodation, meals, and training, scholarship recipients will receive an invitation to participate in an International Calibration. And, of course, once certified as bird ringers and with the necessary permits from their country’s authorities, we will provide them with a complete scientific bird ringing kit.
Grâce à la création de l’École de baguage des oiseaux d’Afrique de l’Ouest, les bourses d’études progressent. Outre la prise en charge des transports dans les parcs nationaux, de l’hébergement, des repas et de la formation, les boursiers recevront une invitation à participer à un étalonnage international. Enfin, une fois certifiés bagueurs d’oiseaux et munis des autorisations nécessaires des autorités de leur pays, nous leur fournirons un kit complet de baguage scientifique.
